We need more Sales: Dermot’s Story

The Challenge:

Dermot was the Managing Director and Owner of a printing company. The company was hamstrung with debt due to investment in equipment and property. There were nine employees and the business just managed to cover costs and payroll year to year, Dermot’s salary consisted of whatever was left when everyone else had been paid.

The primary issue was the insufficient focus on Sales generation, with a consequent adverse effect on Cash Flow.

Dermot wanted to be in a position to pay off all debts, pay himself a reasonable wage and reduce bank debt, while sharing profits with the Team.

Time management was a problem too. Dermot was responsible for doing everything including making the sales, managing the team and monitoring the accounts. Most business came from repeat customers and there was no capacity to generate new or increased sales.

How I Worked With Dermot:

It was clear we needed to immediately free up Dermot’s time to increase focus on sales:

  • We developed a suite of reports on Operations, Finance and Sales. 
  • The Office Manager was made General Manager. 
  • Dermot’s primary focus became Sales & Business Development, with less than one day a week managing everything else. 

Through direct connection with customers, existing and new, Dermot came to understand and realise that the company was continually chasing a reducing market.

The Results:

Through development of new customers and services, sales and margins improved. Staff participated in a bonus scheme. Dermot paid himself a living wage and was able to first reinstate and then accelerate bank repayments so that he had the option of retiring earlier if he so wished.
