Overcoming The Five Dysfunctions of a Team: A Field Guide for Leaders, Managers, and Facilitators

by Patrick M. Lencioni

Lencioni has an easy and relaxed style which allows him to engage us and get his message across simply and effectively. He both entertains and educates us through his capacity to tell a good story.

This book is an assessment and presentation of the critical aspects that must be present in order for a team to function well. The primary dysfunctions are:

  • Lack of Trust
  • Fear of Conflict
  • Lack of Commitment
  • Avoidance of Accountability
  • Inattention to Results

For business owners or managers who believe that the team is important this is an exceptionally easy read, setting out and reinforcing the principles through a case study (from a fictitious company) and really causing one to think about their approach.

The format is that of an entertaining story, very well written, giving a practical example of the issues arising. This is followed up by a summary chapter which reinforces the principles in the manner of a good text book.

If you are already familiar with the One Minute Manager series of books, you will recognise the format, though in my own opinion, this is to a more professional level.

This falls into the category of books to read and retain for reference in your Business Bookcase.

Happy to recommend it with four Stars
